At a time when the world is grappling with climate change, understanding the Sustainable Development Goals is essential

Climate change is clearly the biggest threat staring humankind in the face. It is an existential crisis.

In that context, it is necessary to understand the dynamics of climate change and steps to remedy it, especially the Paris Climatic Accord of 2015.

Climate change refers to the change in the Earth’s atmosphere over a long period of time, it is linked to the idea of global warming.

Global warming refers to a situation where the infrared radiation (solar radiation) of the sun is trapped.

It is trapped by greenhouse gases that are generated by the burning of fossil fuels, agricultural activities etc.

So, the climate of the Earth warms up leading to unusual climatic events.

Such events are an increase in the frequency of floods, cyclones, droughts etc.

One of the biggest challenges has been the increase in the temperature of the Earth over a period of time.

At present the Earth’s temperature is increasing at an alarming rate.

Paris Accord

In October-November 2015, all 195 member countries of the United Nations gathered at Paris, France for taking expeditious action on climate change.

This culminated into the Paris Climate Accord of 2015.

The Paris Accord of 2015 is also known as COP 21 or Conference of Parties 21.

This summit was held under the aegis of UNFCCC or United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The Paris Accord of 2015 pledged to hold the increase in global annual temperatures to below 2 degree Celsius and if possible keep it below 1.5 degree Celsius.

It also drafted the Sustainable Development Goals for the years 2016-2030.

It replaced the Millennium Development Goals which was set up in 2000 and continued till 2015.
