नारायणं नमस्कृत्य नरं चैव नरोत्तमम्।

01001000c देवीं सरस्वतीं चैव ततो जयमुदीरयेत् ||

नमस्कृत्य Bowing down नारायणं to Narayana, च ऎव and also नरं to Nara, नरोत्तमम् the foremost among men, च ऎव and also देवीं सरस्वतीं to Goddess Sarasvati, ततो then जयं Jaya उदीरयॆत् should be recited.

Bowing down to Narayana, and also to Nara, the foremost among men, and also to Goddess Sarasvati, should Jaya be recited.

01001001A लोमहर्षणपुत्र उग्रश्रवाः सूतः पौराणिको नैमिषारण्ये शौनकस्य कुलपतेर्द्वादशवार्षिके सत्रे।|

01001002a समासीनानभ्यगच्चद् ब्रह्मर्षीन् संशितव्रतान् |

01001002c विनयावनतो भूत्वा कदा चित् सूतनन्दनः।|

कदा चित् Once सूतनंदनः son of Suta, सूतः पौराणिकः Suta expert in Puranas, लॊमहर्षणपुत्रः son of Lomaharshana उग्रश्रवाः Ugrashravas विनयावनतॊ भूत्वा bowing politely, अभ्यगच्छत् approached ब्रह्मर्षीन् संशितव्रतान् Brahmarshis of strict vows समासीनान् seated कुलपतॆः at Kulapati शौनकस्य Shaunaka’s द्वादशवार्षिकॆ twelve-year सत्रॆ long sacrifice नैमिशारण्यॆ in Naimisha forest ॥

Once, Ugrashravas, the son of Lomaharshana, the Suta, expert in Puranas, bowing politely, approached the Brahmarshis of strict vows seated at Kulapati Shaunaka’s twelve-year long sacrifice in the Naimisha forest.

01001003a तमाश्रममनुप्राप्तं नैमिषारण्यवासिनः|

01001003c चित्राः श्रोतुं कथास्तत्र परिवव्रुस्तपस्विनः।|

तत्र There नैमिषारण्यवासिनः तपस्विनः the resident ascetics of the Naimisha forest परिवव्रुः surrounded तम् him आश्रमम् अनुप्राप्तं who arrived at the Ashrama श्रोतुं to listen चित्राः कथाः to wonderful stories.

There, the resident ascetics of the Naimisha forest, surrounded him, who arrived at the Ashrama, to listen to wonderful stories.

01001004a अभिवाद्य मुनींस्तांस्तु सर्वानेव कृतांजलिः|

01001004c अपृच्चत् स तपोवृद्धिं सद्भिश्चैवाभिनन्दितः।|

अभिवाद्य Saluting सर्वान् all तां मुनीन् those Munis कृतांजलिः with folded hands, च and अभिनंदितः ऎव being saluted too सद्भिः by the virtuous, स he अपृच्चत् enquired तपोवृद्धिं about the progress of austerities.

Saluting all those Munis with folded hands, and being saluted too by the virtuous, he enquired about the progress of austerities.

01001005a अथ तेषूपविष्टेषु सर्वेष्वेव तपस्विषु |

01001005c निर्दिष्टमासनं भेजे विनयाल्लोमहर्षणिः।|

अथ Now तॆषु सर्वॆषु ऎव that all those तपस्विषु Tapasvis उपविष्टॆषु were seated, लॊमहर्षणिः Lomaharshana’s son विनयात् politely भॆजॆ took निर्दिष्टं आसनं the seat he was shown.

Now that all those Tapasvis were seated, Lomaharshana’s son politely took the seat he was shown.

01001006a सुखासीनं ततस्तं तु विश्रान्तमुपलक्ष्य च।

01001006c अथापृच्चदृषिस्तत्र कश्चित् प्रस्तावयन् कथाः॥

ततः Then, उपलक्ष्य seeing तं him सुखासीनं comfortably seated च and विश्रांतं rested तत्र there, अथ now, कश्चित् one ऋषिः Rishi, प्रस्तावयन् starting कथाः the conversations, अपॄच्छद् asked.

Then, seeing him comfortably seated and rested there, one of the Rishis, starting the conversations, asked.

01001007a कुत आगम्यते सौते क्व चायं विहृतस्त्वया।

01001007c कालः कमलपत्राक्ष शंसैतत् पृच्चतो मम॥

सौते O Souti कमलपत्राक्ष with the eyes like the lotus leaves! कुत From where आगम्यते did you come? च and क्व where विहृतः त्वया did you spend अयं कालः this time? शंस Tell मम me पृच्चतॊ who is asking ऎतत् this.

“O Souti with the eyes like the lotus leaves! Where did you come from? And where did you spend this time? Tell me, who is asking this.”

1001008 सूत उवाच।

01001008a जनमेजयस्य राजर्षेः सर्पसत्रे महात्मनः।

01001008c समीपे पार्थिवेन्द्रस्य सम्यक् पारिक्षितस्य च॥

01001009a कृष्णद्वैपायनप्रोक्ताः सुपुण्या विविधाः कथाः।

01001009c कथिताश्चापि विधिवद्या वैशंपायनेन वै॥

सूत Suta उवाच said: सर्पसत्रॆ At the snake sacrifice of पार्थिवॆंद्रस्य king of kings, पारिक्षितस्य son of Parikshit, जनमॆजयस्य Janamejaya, च and समीपॆ in the presence of महात्मनः राजर्षॆः that great royal sage, सम्यक् all विविधाः various कथाः stories सुपुण्याः that yield spiritual merit, कृष्णद्वैपायनप्रॊक्ताः told by Krishna Dvaipayana कथिताः were narrated विधिवद्या systematically वैशंपायनॆन by Vaishampayana.

Suta said: “At the snake sacrifice of king of kings, son of Parikshit, Janamejaya, and in the presence of that great royal sage, Vaishampayana narrated systematically all the various stories that yield spiritual merit, told by Krishna Dvaipayana.

01001010a श्रुत्वाहं ता विचित्रार्था महाभारतसंश्रिताः।

01001010c बहूनि संपरिक्रम्य तीर्थान्यायतनानि च॥

01001011a समन्तपंचकं नाम पुण्यं द्विजनिषेवितम्।

01001011c गतवानस्मि तं देशं युद्धं यत्राभवत् पुरा।

01001011e पाण्डवानां कुरूणां च सर्वेषां च महीक्षिताम्॥

शृत्वा After listening ता to those विचित्रार्था wonderful meanings महाभारतसंश्रिताः contained in the Mahabharata च and संपरिक्रम्य taking a round of बहूनि many तीर्थानि sacred fords आयतानि and sanctuaries अहं I गतवानस्मि went to तं that पुण्य दॆशं sacred place नाम called समंतपंचकं Samantapancaka यत्र where युद्धं the battle between पाण्डवानां the Pandavas च and कुरूणां the Kauravas च and सर्वेषां all महीक्षिताम् the kings of the earth अभवत् occurred पुरा in the past.

After listening to those wonderful meanings contained in the Mahabharata and taking a round of many sacred fords and sanctuaries, I went to that sacred place called Samantapancaka where the battle between the Pandavas and the Kauravas and all the kings of the earth occurred in the past.

01001012a दिदृक्षुरागतस्तस्मात् समीपं भवतामिह।

01001012c आयुष्मन्तः सर्व एव ब्रह्मभूता हि मे मताः॥

तस्मात् From there, आगतं I have come इह here समीपं near दिदृक्षुः to see भवतां you सर्व ऎव all आयुष्मंतः who have long lives and ब्रह्मभूता हि are equal to Brahma himself, मे मताः according to me.

From there, I have come here near to see you all who have long lives and are equal to Brahma himself, according to me.

01001013a अस्मिन्यज्ञे महाभागाः सूर्यपावकवर्चसः।

01001013c कृताभिषेकाः शुचयः कृतजप्या हुताग्नयः।

01001013e भवन्त आसते स्वस्था ब्रवीमि किमहं द्विजाः॥

द्विजाः O Brahmins! किं What ब्रवीमि shall I tell भवंत you, महाभागाः greatly fortunate ones, स्वस्था leisurely आसतॆ sitting अस्मिन्यज्ञॆ in this Yajna, सूर्यपावकवर्चसः radiating like the sun or the fire, कृताभिषॆकाः bathed, शुचयः purified, कृतजप्या completing the Japas and हुताग्नयः fire sacrifices?

O Brahmins! What shall I tell you, greatly fortunate ones, leisurely sitting in this Yajna, radiating like the sun or the fire, bathed, purified, completing the Japas and fire sacrifices?

01001014a पुराणसंश्रिताः पुण्याः कथा वा धर्मसंश्रिताः।

01001014c इतिवृत्तं नरेन्द्राणामृषीणां च महात्मनाम्॥

पुण्याः The sacred कथाः stories पुराणसंश्रिताः contained in the Puranas वा or इतिवृत्तं the histories धर्मसंश्रिताः containing Dharma महात्मानाम् of great-souled नरॆंद्राणां kings च and ऋषीणां Rishis?

The sacred stories contained in the Puranas or the histories containing Dharma of great-souled kings and Rishis?"

01001015 ऋषय ऊचुः।

01001015a द्वैपायनेन यत् प्रोक्तं पुराणं परमर्षिणा।

01001015c सुरैर्ब्रह्मर्षिभिश्चैव श्रुत्वा यदभिपूजितम्॥

ऋषय The Rishis ऊचुः said: पुराणं The Purana यत् which पॊक्तं was told परमर्षिणा by the greatest Rishi द्वैपायनेन Dvaipayana, श्रुत्वा after hearing यत् which सुरैः the Gods च and ब्रह्मर्षिभिः the Brahmarshis ऎव too अभिपूजितम् honored…

The Rishis said: “The Purana which was told by the greatest Rishi Dvaipayana, after hearing which the Gods and the Brahmarshis too honored . . .… …

01001016a तस्याख्यानवरिष्ठस्य विचित्रपदपर्वणः।

01001016c सूक्ष्मार्थन्याययुक्तस्य वेदार्थैर्भूषितस्य च॥

तस्य that आख्यान वरिष्ठस्य greatest story सूक्ष्मार्थन्याययुक्तस्य filled with subtle meanings of logic, विचित्रपदपर्वणः wonderful arrangement of words, च and वॆदार्थभूषितस्य adorned with the meanings of Vedas

…. . .that greatest story filled with subtle meanings of logic, wonderful arrangements of words, and adorned with the meanings of Vedas . . .

01001017a भारतस्येतिहासस्य पुण्यां ग्रन्थार्थसंयुताम्।

01001017c संस्कारोपगतां ब्राह्मीं नानाशास्त्रोपबृंहिताम्॥

पुण्यां that sacred इतिहासस्य history भारतस्य of Bharata, ग्रंथार्थसंयुतां the work filled with meanings, संस्कारॊपगतां refined ब्राह्मीं speech, नानाशास्त्रॊपबृंहितां supported by various sciences

. . .that sacred history of Bharata, the work filled with meanings, refined speech, and supported by various sciences . . .

01001018a जनमेजयस्य यां राज्ञो वैशंपायन उक्तवान्।

01001018c यथावत् स ऋषिस्तुष्ट्या सत्रे द्वैपायनाज्ञया॥

यां that which वैशंपायनः Vaishampayana उत्कवान् narrated सत्रे at the sacrifice, यथावत् as is, द्वैपयनाज्ञया at the behest of Dvaipayana तुष्ट्या to the satisfaction राज्ञॊ of king जनमॆजयस्य Janamejaya

. . .that which Vaishampayana narrated at the sacrifice, as is, at the behest of Dvaipayana, to the satisfaction of king Janamejaya . . .

01001019a वेदैश्चतुर्भिः समितां व्यासस्याद्भुतकर्मणः।

01001019c संहितां श्रोतुमिच्चामो धर्म्यां पापभयापहाम्॥

अद्भुतकर्मणः the wonderful work व्यासस्य of Vyasa, संहितां that collection धर्म्यां of Dharmas समितां that are attached चतुर्भिः वॆदैः to the four Vedas पापभयापहाम् and wash away the sins and fears, इच्छामॊ we wish श्रॊतुं to hear.

. . .the wonderful work of Vyasa, that collection of Dharmas that are attached to the four Vedas and wash away the sins and fears, we wish to hear."
